Keeping a Positive Attitude During the Job Search

Searching for a job is nobody’s idea of a good time. First of all, it’s a lot of work. You need to network, research companies, put together cover letters and resumes, and prepare for interviews. On top of that, you have to deal with the rejection from employers, which may be the most challenging experience of all.

There’s a lot of stress and uncertainty. It takes a good deal of mental toughness, perseverance and resilience to see it through. Although it’s tough, there are things you can do to help keep yourself in a positive frame of mind.

A healthy lifestyle

This is imperative to help you handle the stress and the grind of a job search. You need to be physically at your best to deal with it. That means getting enough exercise. Experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise. This will not only help your body, but your mind as well, helping you to maintain your energy and positive outlook. It’s also important to make sure you get enough sleep and that you eat well.

Practice stress relievers

These are activities like meditation or breathing exercises. They can really help to reduce stress.

Socialize

Make sure you stay in touch with family and friends because they can be a good support system for you during this time.

Take breaks

Some people believe the longer and the harder they work at any one time, the better off they will be or the more they will be able to accomplish. But this is not true. Human beings can only focus or concentrate intently for about an hour. After that, we need to take a break to rest and recover. Doing this will enable us to return to our work with more energy.

So it is important to take breaks. But when you do, you should do something that will help to increase your energy, such as doing some calisthenics or going for a walk. You shouldn’t just stay at your desk and surf the web, for example

Monitor negative thoughts

The longer the job search, the more likely you may be to experience negative thoughts or emotions. It’s only natural. But when you do, you need to counteract them. You need to realize that these kinds of thoughts are rooted in our emotions, rather than rational thinking, and so they can be dispersed through rational thought. We need to remember that just because we have negative thoughts doesn’t make them true.

Record your accomplishments

Whenever you have a win or reach a goal or accomplish something, be sure to write it down so that you have something to record your progress.

Read how others did it

To help revive your spirits, it’s also helpful to read about other people to see how they overcame adversity.

Have support

You should have a person or people that you can reach out to when things get tough or when you’re not in the best mood.
