The latest government figures show the economy added 1.4 million jobs in August, bringing the overall unemployment rate down to 8.4 percent, still high but much better than April, when it was almost 15 percent.

Employment Figures for the Northwest

In Anchorage, the unemployment rate has fallen from a high of over 14 percent in April to 6.6 percent in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The economy in Anchorage created more than 16,000 new jobs from April to August. The leisure and hospitality industry had the biggest jump, adding 7,000 jobs during that time period.

In the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metropolitan area, unemployment declined from a high of more than 14 percent in April to 8.4 percent in August. From April to August, the construction industry in this area added more than 10,000 jobs, transportation more than 11,000 jobs, and the leisure and hospitality industry a whopping 36,000 jobs.
