How to Write Better Job Descriptions

Often when companies post job descriptions, they are disappointed with the responses because many of them are not a very good match with the requirements of the job.

A primary reason for this problem could be the job description itself and the way it is put together. It may not convey the important aspects of the job or focus clearly enough on the job requirements.

Giving an Accurate Picture

When putting a job description together, it’s important to keep in mind that it needs to be informative. It needs to give the job candidate a clear and accurate picture of the requirements and duties of the job. Often the descriptions are nothing but assembly-line boilerplate that is too vague and too broad. Use clear, simple language. Be direct and specific.

An Advertisement

Another piece of the puzzle that is often missing is a good, clear explanation of why the company is a desirable place to work, why the job candidate would want to work there. The job description should also be an advertisement for the company.

Another important piece is a list of the particular skills, traits, and knowledge that a person should have in order to be successful in the job. This is a key element of the job description but one that is often not given the attention it deserves. Before posting the description, you need to be sure that you are giving an accurate accounting of the skills that are actually used in the job as it is currently structured.

All of these items are fairly basic elements of the job description. But too often they are not given the attention they deserve. They don’t explain clearly enough what the requirements are, and there is often no cogent reason given for why someone would want to work at the company. In addition to all this, the job title is often inaccurate.

All of these problems can add up, especially when you take into account the fact that the average job candidate spends only about 30 seconds looking at a job description. Finally, someone needs to review the job descriptions every few months to ensure that the information in them is up to date.
