Should You Take the Job or Not?

After receiving a job offer, the next step is to weigh the good and not so good aspects of the job and decide whether it is for you. You need to think about various aspects of the job — the person supervising you, your coworkers, the work environment, when making your decision. Here are some things to think about.

1.Doing the job

Think about the job itself and whether you will enjoy doing it. Will it challenge you? Will it give you a sense of fulfillment and meaning? Or are you taking it just for the money? Or because you are unhappy at your current job?

To help with your decision making, it may help to write up an account of the pros and cons of the job.

2. Career development

Another question to ask yourself that may help you determine whether you want the job is how it will help to propel you toward your ultimate career goals. Will the job help you to acquire the skills and knowledge to aid you in your career development?

3. Company culture

You also need to think carefully about how you will fit in with the culture of the company. You probably have been able to get some idea of what the culture is like from your research of the company and also from the job interview.

Does the culture align with your own personality and values? Company culture is important and you need to be sure you will feel comfortable working at the company before you decide to take the job.

4. Salary and benefits

You also need to consider the salary and benefits being offered by the company. Are you satisfied with the amount? Do you feel you are being paid what you’re worth? If the answer is no, you need to think hard about whether to accept the offer because if you don’t feel the pay is suitable, it will only create resentment later.

If you have concerns about the pay, you can try to negotiate an increase in the salary, or failing that, a better benefits package.
