How To Set Actionable Career Goals

If you want to have success in your career, you need to have a plan. It’s important to set goals and determine how you will reach them.

Here are a few tips on setting career goals.

1. Review your current situation

The first step in any effort to establish career goals is to take a look at where you’re at now. How do you feel about your current job? Do you enjoy it? Do you find that it gives you a sense of purpose and meaning? Is it challenging for you? Are you satisfied with the salary? Are you where you expected to be at this point in your life?

Answering these questions will help you more clearly define where it is exactly you want to go. It will help to give you a better idea of what you like and don’t like and the direction you may find most fulfilling.

2. Establish some provisional goals.

Consider the kind of work that really motivates you and that you enjoy doing. For example, do you enjoy taking on new challenges? What really interests you and gets you excited? You have to think about what you really desire to come up with your tentative goals.

3. Research

Take a little time to find out more about your profession, the trends and opportunities that are available. Also examine overall job trends to see where things will be going in the future and the kinds of skills and knowledge that will be in demand, as well as those that will become obsolete.

4. How do you get there?

You are at point A, and you need to reach your goals, which are at point B. So the question is, how do you get from point A to point B? You need to put together a step-by-step plan of action that will get you from where you are now to where you want to be. What are the kinds of things you need to do to move toward these goals? Do you need more training? Would having a mentor be helpful? What new skills do you need to learn and how will you do that? All of this will go into your action plan.

Write out your plan with benchmark goals that you want to reach along the way to your final destination, along with a timeline for when you expect to achieve them.

5. Don’t stop networking

Keep in touch with other people in your profession. They can be valuable sources of information as well when thinking about career goals. Use them as a sounding board for your ideas and get their advice and input.
