How to Strategize for Your Job Search

There are reams of information out there about searching for a job – how to write a resume and cover letter, how to interview, how to network. Much of this information, however, focuses on the nuts and bolts of the job hunting process, the tactics and techniques of the search.
Before you get involved in any of that, however, you need to focus on strategy, some big picture thinking to help you get organized.
Here are a few things to consider.
1. Establish some goals.
Before you begin working, you need to figure out what you are working toward. What is it you want to accomplish with your job search? Be specific and write things down so that they are clear in your mind.
Then work up some along-the-way goals. How many companies do you want to research in a week? How many networking contacts do you want to make each week? How many resumes do you want to get out?
2. Make priorities
Your goals should help you to set your priorities – the things which are most important and that should take precedence in your search. These are the things you need to focus your energy on.
3. Get serious, get organized
You should set aside time each day for a job search, and during that time, you should focus on just the job search. Cut out all distractions – check email later, surf the web later, chat with friends later, run errands later. It has been said that searching for a job should be a full-time job itself, and that is way you need to treat it.
4. Create a schedule
Make up a schedule each day – what you are going to do, when you are going to do it, how much time you are going to spend on it. And keep a record of what you have accomplished each day. This will help you assess how your work has been going and whether you need to make adjustments in your approach.
5. Use tools to help you.
There are many more tools to use today than in the past thanks to information technology. There are many websites on the Internet that are designed to help people with a job search. One example is Indeed.com, which collects a number of different job boards in one location. Another app is called Huntsy, which helps you set up interviews and apply for jobs.
