How to Get Motivated to Exercise

The value of exercise is undisputed. It is one of the most potent things we can do for our health, mentally, physically and even spiritually. Its benefits are pretty much unmatched.
While we all recognize the benefits of exercise, many of us don’t take advantage of it. We seldom seem to find the time to fit it into our schedules. We just cannot seem to get motivated. For those of you who fall into this category, here are a few ideas for giving you incentives to get moving.
1. Exercise with someone.
This is a good way to get you into the gym. Doing it this way creates an obligation that you have to another person. You don’t want to let the person down, especially if it is your spouse or a close friend. Studies have shown that people who exercise with a partner have a 90 percent higher rate of sticking to their routine than those who do not.
2. Join a gym
Most people do this anyway. But if you haven’t, you might want to consider it for the incentive it gives you to work out. The incentive here is money. If you are paying a monthly membership fee, you most likely will want to get your money’s worth, and that means getting into the gym to exercise.
3. Keep a record
This is a good idea for a number of reasons. When you keep a record, you can easily see what you have done, when you have done it, and how you have improved. Seeing a record of your progress is great for motivation.
4. Reward yourself
Did you make it into the gym today? Good. Reward yourself with a food treat, or an extra hour of television or internet time tonight. This is also another good way to motivate yourself. Promise yourself a reward if you work out.
5. Remove obstacles
Our willpower is limited, and the more obstacles we have to overcome to get into the gym, the more we wear our willpower down, and the less the chance we will make it in. That is why you need to remove as many barriers as you can. For example, many people work out first thing in the morning, to reduce the chance that something else will interfere, or that they will feel too tired. They get it out of the way immediately, which also has the added benefit of putting them in a good mood.
Also, Lay your workout clothes out the night before, so you don’t have to go hunting for them in the morning.
